Posted this on engine forum too.
Replaced waterpump and now got engine oil running out of one of the studs, steady stream as well.
Years ago I replaced some of the timing case and probably some of the waterpump bolts with stainless steel studs to aid gasket location . They havent caused any issues in 14yrs until now.
What's going on and how best to fix? @jamesmartin ;)

It'll be interesting to see if that's where you've put some studding in. If so, the gasket might have been stuck in a thread a few mm out and got torn as the casing got pulled up against it.

Right, got it all to bits and gasket case to block looked fine but I did have a lot of old oil running from that area and collecting around the sump lip, I always thought I had a leaky sump somewhere and I did indeed remove it and the ladder frame a couple of years ago and resealed it but still got leaks, methinks it was coming from this stud all the time, I just couldn't see it with where it is and all the stuff in the way.
Looking at the pic, what did landrover use where that stud is, a bolt? Or stud with a plain shank so oil wouldn't migrate up the threads?
I think that's my problem, the stud goes into an oilway(?) And pressurised oil is being forced along the threads and out past the nut holding the pump on although I can't see how it's getting past the gasket hole and leaking down the block, cheapy gasket maybe but I guess it's not meant to hold lots of oil in?
I've also got another problem...
The M8 stainless steel stud won't come out!
Knowing me I probably used some kind of thread sealent or locking compound on it when I built it up knowing it went into an oilway.
I've been at this stud for 2 hrs + and the best I've got is maybe an 1/8 th of a turn total, it'll move back and forth easily through this 1/8th of a turn and I had to use a blow torch to get it to shift that much. Getting touque on it isn't a problem it's just solid and being stainless it's close to snapping off.
I don't know now what to do for the best.
I could cut it off flush and attempt to drill it out BUT it's stainless and swarf will probably get into the oilway.
Or some sort of sealent on the gasket (blue holymor?) And around where the stud enters the block and a fibre washer under the nut holding the water pump on.
Or maybe don't use a gasket case to block and use blue instead and get some around the threads to hopefully stop it working its way up?
Any thoughts ?plus a tag for you
James as you fiddle with these more than most I guess.

oil would have been coming past the gasket to the screw hole then out along it ,it would have if it had been the proper bolt/stud but not as bad, it doesnt go into an oil way thats to the left of it, not a good idea using stainless studding, std bolts are better and are far easier to sort if you snap them, heats going to be your best bet, if the face of block and timing chest are good just use a new decent gasket with a little smear of hylomar or silicone and let it dry a few mins otherwise theres a good chance the gasket will spread and split with the lube from the sealant, and dont forget the little gasket that sits in the middle of the block front
