Oil leaking from hub

Just spotted oil leaking from my rear left hub. It is gear oil not brake fluid, so suspect seal has gone on axle. Told I have to buy new bearings etc. Is this crap to get me to pay more or fact...???

Mabe bearings depends on what you find when its stripped down. They may need greasing and adjusting but if there is any doubt your better off spending the £12-ish and replace them yourself. No doubt somone will charge you a fortune for the parts if they are doing the work but thats what you pay for service.

I had to buy expensive bearings once from an autofactors £50 to get me going that day for a comp as a bearing race that was previously fitted had a pit in one of the rollers (manufacturer defect) I got the bearing and it was the same brand as paddocks cheapos so I'll be sticking to those from now on.

~Depending on how contaminated the brake shoes/pads are you may need to replace them also.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check the pads also as the amount of oil running down the inner of the alloy is a fair amount, I reckon there will be some contamination. I hadn't thought of that...

If doing one side, should I do the other? I may get it checked also.

take a look and see if they are nearly worn out then change them if they are in good nick I wouldnt bother

Mine has the same problem. Hoping to get it done at the weekend. Oil on the inside of the wheel come out the back of the disc. Looks like its not that hard to do.

I'll have a rattle at it this weekend (before the rugby) and see how I go. It's going in for a full engine overhaul inc timing in a fortnight, but keen to sort prior to or i'll have a full rear diff overhaul on my hands also!!

Hello, i seem to have a simular problem, although the oil seems to be traveling down the spline of the half shaft and then leaking from the rubber cap on the end of the hub. There is a little wear between the flange and half shaft and headache in the bearing which i am going to try and adjust. My question is when this wear occurs between the half shaft and the flange is there one that wears first or is it better to replace them as a pair?

I think a new rubber cap will stop the leak although it is just masking the problem.

Can anyone recommend where i can buy good/value for money hub kits from.

the drive flange is generally less hardned that the drive shaft so wears first so unless you've done 1000s of miles with a worn flange the drive shaft should be fine - normally bearing can be tightened and along with new gaskets this will stop the leak - but for what a new set of bearings and flanges costs (see spam below) it's sensible to change them rather than to keep adjusting

Thanks Sean, i'll get the flange first and try it on the shaft.

when i had oil leaking the same as yours it was the axle tube seal replaced that job done the oil will do your bearings some good but will in the end wash the grease out

I have the same problem on the front drivers side. I got the hub seal today but on closer inspection Id say the leak is coming from the swivel seal and I dont think Id manage that alone. The leak is dripping from the bottom of the swivel maybe its coming from further along the axel any suggestions?

yeah, drain it and fill it with grease... ( the swivel)

Iv read that here before but there is no drain plug on the swivel. Is there another way to drain it?

I hesitated before answering this because my method will be shouted down by some on here I think.

I would take the wheel off, then take off the bottom swivel pivot, let it drain and refit. there's no need to get all the oil out, but fill it with grease anyway. buy the pre measured sachet from any LR shop..

I know some will say you need to re-shim etc, but you dont... just put it back as it came off

Thanks for your help and Iv read about the reshiming too its put my off attempt it myself to be honest
