hi all
i have just got myself a disco 300 tdi but it has oil leaking down the rear of the flywheel housing and its pretty bad . i have had the sump off and fitted a new one i used the correct sealant and torqued the sump bolts up, but its still got a leak round that area  if it was the rear main seal wouldnt it be leaking out of the wading plug ??? is there a crank main bearing cap there that leaks ???? any info would be a great help

The sump can be a right bugger to seal correctly, are you sure it's not that? I had a leak at the vaccum pump which ran down? Have you checked above the sump at the back before you consider the main seal? I would agee with you regarding the crank seal that it would come out of wading plug. So, when you unscrewed the plug did oil come out? If you are going to replace the seal make sure IRS genuine and take your time fitting it.

Good luck, let us know how you get on

Yeah,Im intersted in this. The 97 disco has a major ongoing oil leak that I thought was just the rear crank seal but on putting the plug in,it continued....I suspected the sump but not keen to take it off.I think a good Jizer and wash down then a good watching brief at short intervals may help us both.

removed the gearbox to find a new clutch/flywheel and rear main seal have recently been fitted  so removed flywheel bellhousing and found that the rubber seals on number 5 main bearing cap leaking . fitted new seals and i am putting it back together at the moment . so fingers crossed all sorted
