Hey guys!

Can somone please help with a question?

I have a defender 90 3.5 V8

I have a breather pipe coming from the top of the engine above where the gearbox is that appears to be leaking oil (Or so i think!) I have put a red arrow on the pic attached to help identify.

The engine oil has never been overfilled, there no mayonazy stuff in the filler or water header tank to suggest a gasket failiure.

It is quite a substantial amount of oil coming out (enough to leak onto the exhorst, giving off smoke)

If this is the cause of the oil leak what will be causing it?

Cheers Scott

after taking mine to a garage for a small oil leak they said that the breather was blocked and this causes the engine to **** oil out, apparently they get blocked quite a lot

no idea how much exactly, because when i bought it the engine and box were covered in oil so when it gets warm all the oil drips off onto the floor, i cleaned off most of it and after the breathers were done there is only the occasional drip of oil on the floor now

That's looks like one of the gearbox/transfer box breathers, not the engine. The engine breather goes through the inlet side of the engine.

There should be two hockey-stick shaped plastic pipes. If oil is coming out, you may find that the box(es) are overfilled or you have the wrong oil or there's an oil leak on the pressure pump making the oil foam.

Thanks listerdiesel!

I can see where the drain plug is on the gear/transfer box but could you tell me where i would find the filler for the gearbox and transfer oil?

I have an LT95 four speed gear box fitted.

They are tucked away a bit by memory, and I've not got a Defender manual handy, but I think they are both almost flush to the surface, the transfer box level plug is on the back vertical face on the passenger side of the handbrake drum, the gearbox level plug is on the same side as the drain plug but further up and to the rear.

Hope this helps,

Peter
