Another shot in the dark. My 20-year old P38 has a significant oil leak at the front of the diesel engine, which over time spreads oil over everything below and behind it. It looks as if the oil is coming from high up on the front of the engine, maybe the front cover or the head joint. Before I pull everything to bits it would be useful to know if there are any common leak paths at the front of these engines. I wondered if it could be the front crankshaft seal with the oil being lifted by the pulleys & belts, but the oil is not spread around much beyond the front of the block, sump and axle.

Engine oil cooler pipes is a common leakage point also auto box cooler pipes and power steering pipes.

Sorry guys, busy for a day or two. Thanks for your tips. Yes 1999 car. I will try to wash it again then crawl under every time I drive it to try to see where the oil appears first. There is just so much space in there to see things!
