Hi guys, this is my first post as an owner so go easy if I ask anything stupid. I've tried searching for the answer to my problems on the forum but no luck. Anyway, I've just bought a 200tdi defender and it's leaking a fair bit of oil. I tried having a look today and it seems like it's maybe coming from around the sump gasket or the turbo return pipe which I hear is a common fault. Whilst I was looking I noticed two holes which I think are threaded and I was wondering if they were maybe supposed to have plugs in them.

This one is between the sump and the pulley at the front of the engine:

And the other one is in the middle of the gearbox:

Cheers for any responses and sorry if i've asked any stupid questions!

Those holes are supposed to be there, they let oil out that may be leaking. Sump doesn't have a gasket but clean off engine and keep on eye on where oil is coming from, if its only leaking with engine running etc...

Drain hole for the cambelt case. There is a wading plug to fit if you are going to drive through deep water. You shouldn't have them in for normal driving.

Lots of oil leaking, or just a spot on the road?

Cheers for the replies. I'm getting a wee puddle (about 200mm diameter) on the road when i'm parked at work for the day. It seems to be up the side of the engine where the dipstick and turbo are and on the heads of the sump bolts.

my 97 300tdi developed an oil leak. Lots of oil on my drive. Eventualy traced to rocker cover gasket leaking from rear. Lots of oil over engine. Cleaned off and replaced gasket with genuine LR part. No more oil on drive!! (had to replace about 20 block pavers to repair drive)

I heard a splash of diesel then a jet wash n a brush gets up oil.

Rocker gaskets leak for a pastime, replace mine twice a year! (maybe I am buying crap ones!) also had bad leak around the vacuum unit which was just a hardened gasket, small leaks from front timing cover and rear bell housing seem normal from what I read as long as its not big.
