oil leak is doing my head in

this started off with oil collecting on the front tie bar (think thats what it's called) this was really bugging me so i steam cleaned the gearbox, block, head ect. so i could eliminate the worse things, but looked like my quick rocker cover gasket replacement, was the culprit.

I did the gasket yesterday, today after the kids were dropped off, i looked again, and it was back again, i am not really noticing the oil loss on the level, but it's one of my pet hates, oil leaks...i had a good poke around with a torch, and it looks like it's coming from the near the bulk head at the rear of the engine between the head and the bell housing.

I took the intake pipe off the turbo, and it had oil round where the pipe connects, and in the first bit of the intake rubber pipe.

i can't get a proper look at the back of the engine as it's so close to the bulkhead, this is driving me nuts not knowing if it's going to be expensive or not, i don't have the money to splash out on garage labour, if it's straight forward i could probably manage to do it, as long as it didn't involve taking the engine out ect.

Can sombody suggest what this could be, maybe it's a long shot as i can't identify where exactly the leak is coming from.

also could somebody suggest a handy person with experience of disco's near me, that i could take it to so they could have a look see.

Is it a 300TDI?
Could be the breather pipe that goes from the "thing" on the side of the rocker cover, around the back of the engine to the pipe on the inlet side of the turbo

i checked the breather on the turbo air intake, and the other side on the black upside down top hat looking thing, they both had oil in, not sure if this is a potential problem or not?

could the cat being blocked, or coked up bad, add to the back pressure and cause oil to climb up the breather pipe or black tophat thingy

i'm due to fit a decat pipe soon as the weather gets good enough, not sure if that would help or not.

It's normal for some oil to be in the breather thing and the pipe. You are meant to clean them out with parafin everynow and again, but the pipe could be leaking

I'll bet it's a leak from the vacuum pump. I managed to repair mine (I'm assuming you've got a 300tdi here) and all it took was a couple of hours work plus about 6 M5 nuts and bolts and a tube of sealant.

The cover is rivetted to the body but you can drill those out, remake the seal using some good sealant gloop and then use the nuts and bolts to lock it down. Not too hard and nowadays I'm not embarrased to park on my friends' drives!

The vac pump sticks out from the engine block below the inlet manifold towards the bellhousing and has a line to the brake servo (that's what it does - supply vacuum to the servo).

I'll bet it's a leak from the vacuum pump. I managed to repair mine (I'm assuming you've got a 300tdi here) and all it took was a couple of hours work plus about 6 M5 nuts and bolts and a tube of sealant.

yes it's a 300 TDI, that does sound like the problem area too...hmmm...will have a look see how difficult it is to access...has anybody done a write up/tutorial with piccies anywhere on here?

the vacuum pump is on the side of the engine, just aft of the lift pump, its an easy enough job to unbolt the old one and bolt on the new one. I think it is covered in Haynes

I did find a pictorial guide - not on this forum though - but I can't find any trace of it now. Try searching for "Wabco vacuum pump repair" and see where that leads you. It's really not a hard job, a bit fiddly but nothing to worry about.

Thanks guys, i have found the tutorial, but this simply tells you how to fix the seal on the top, thats rivitted on, is there any internal parts that need replacing, or is it just the case of drilling sealing and bolting up?

Didn't anyone tell you, Landrovers always leak, its just a Landrover thing, but they don't just leak oil oh no they leak antifreeze, power steering fluid, diff oil, you namer it, if its a fluid it will leak, I know where I have parked my Disco at work because the tarmack is stained in oil lol, I just think its marked it territory.
