This is my Land Rover, there are many like it but this one is mine.

...and in an effort to keep it mine I would like to learn about problems that arise and (attempt) to fix them myself.

I have very little knowledge of motors so please go easy on me!

After the second day of having it MOTd a small oil leak appeared, as I am now roughly 140 miles from the testing place taking it to them is not really an option, hopefully you knowledgable folks can shed some light on this issue.

The drip appears to be coming from here, what I believe is called the bell housing.

I wouldn't mind so much but as I intend to drive 10 miles a day to the beach at Ynyslas I don't want to damage the landy/beach, it's hard to say how much oil has come out of it as that puddle on the floor is roughly 16 hours worth of drippage. I haven't driven off road in it yet or through deep water so I cannot see it being sludgy water at all.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated because I don't know of any specialists near me.

the pics dont tell you alot, could be from g/box in that case would smell like tom cat ****, it could be from the rear engine seal, gear box or engine out 1 or the other, could be from the sump, the draft from travelling would blow the oil dripping on to bell housing.which will give you a false impression its coming from the bell housing, you need to investigate further.

I'll go and have a closer look then and maybe try and clean a little up to see if it continues dripping from the same place.

Sorry to be so vague, I'm just unsure if it's safe to drive thats all.

Ynyslas is by Borth on the west coast of Wales btw.

Your probably not that far from Fenby, I cant prounounce where he's from either, though I think he's more inland, nice country.
The crankshaft oil seal is a suspect on this, and its an engine out job to do, pretty hard for a newbie.
But dont condem the landy yet, might not be that, I suggest a good power wash, or go to a steam cleaners and get the 'ole lot cleaned up as clean as poss, it will be a lot easier to see an oil leak once the motor and box are de-cacked.
Make sure that cat doesnt **** on yer leg while your messing with the landy.
Its hard to say whether the vehicle is safe to drive or not for sure without actually looking at it, however I dont think anythings gonna blow up, the only risk is maybe getting oil on the handbrake which is just behind the gearbox and causing it to slip.

Probably not the best idea but I drove it yesterday for about 16 miles.

the oil leak stopped quite quickly after I cleaned it up a bit and not a lot has appeared to come out of it tbh (that I can see).

not sure if thats an issue for concern or for celebration though, it had a service in the last week though, could something be overfilled?
