 I am a fool!
Ok, so I recently posted regarding oil warning light and stated that the oil level was fine. This unfortunately was an asumption based on the vehicle having had a full specialist inspection prior to buying it followed by a full service- the vehicle has done just 300 miles since this. I had not checked the level myself.......until this morning. Dry dipstick!

Replaced to level needing over 5L. Warning light now resolved

. The vehicle smokes a lot on start up but settles after few minutes. The specialist said the turbo was burning some oil hence smoke but engine was sound. It is a 200tdi- trasplant into 1989 110 County. Thought to have around 70k on it but no service history- hence some peace of mind via inspection. I have not had chance to speak to him regarding the oil change (I assume he did) and how much was removed.

So, I suppose what now? Engine runs sound, strong with no knocks or noises. I drove it approx 50 miles with oil light flickering then parked it up. At least now I know I can drive it- checking oil daily!

-Should the specialist have picked up on this- I am not looking to blame anyone, just wanting to know if he should see the vehicle again as I had planned to continue using him.
-How can I check the severity of the problem assuming it continues to burn oil- there are no spillages where vehicle has been parked up.........when it had oil in it!

A new engine is not out of the question as body getting restored and chassis galvanised in next few months.

Thoughts (apart from pointing out my own stupidity!)

I'd say that "full specialist inspection prior to buying it followed by a full service" is pretty worthless. If they missed (during the service) something as obvious as oil level (they changed the oil, right? And then forgot to refill it????) then what else have they not inspected, or not serviced, that should have been?

If you want something doing properly, do it yourself.

It took 5 ltrs .... bloody hell there wasnt much left in the sump .........

Your either burning it or you got a leak .

checking the oil should be done daily ( or every other ) when you own a landy :D .
and yes that person should of checked the levels at least ( but if you are burning it then they might of been ok at time of check ) .

Keep a close eye on it and go from there

Decided to follow up on the turbo issue. Disconnecting hoses to intercooler revealed a black mess and suspect an intercooler full of oil! Found turbo fan to have a little play (<1mm) but nonetheless an issue. I have a replacement turbo on its way as seals certainly gone aswell. I understand this scenario can burn/lose a stupid amount of oil. Hopefully no other issues when replacement fitted........until the next thing!

I wonder what your exhaust is like inside ? , as the oil seal could blow on the turbine side and dump the oil in the exhaust . but either way your coverd now with a new turbo .
