I have a FL1.8 petrol and all of a sudden, the engine is overheating and on investigation I seem to have oil in the coolant water reservoir. Anyone know what's happening here? I could do with some advice....

Hi yep.!! it looks like your head gasket is going, get it checked out as soon as possible, mine started like that a few weeks ago..

I now have it booked in next week to have it done, at a cost of £450 + V.A.T.

Does not come cheap.!!

Same thing happened to me.. suddenly started overheating and the fans coming on, put in more water ran it for a couple of days and then same again, I checked the oil and water was present. Eventually I had to get the head done, it cost £450 that included having the head skimmed and a mod done to the block so it wouldnt happen again plus I got all the belts changing at the same time.

it is classic case of head gasket failure ---- get it to someonewho can sort it quickly before it becomes very expensive for you ....... regards stu baxter

This could be a result of the gasket cracking get it checked fast

your head gaskets not going its already gone im affraid, dont even need to leave the comfort of my armchair,oh and dont believe it wont happen again no 1 could ever tell you that and keep a straight face on a 1.8 freelander, how old is the car i answered some questions on a previous page if your car is not to old see if landrover will fit the bill hope this helps.

Tried Land Rover Ireland through dealer, they will not stand over repair €1500 with no guarantee on car out of warranty. This pretty shoddy,

They're all correct I'm afraid...your head gasket has indeed announced that it is going terminal on you. Stop using it and get it booked into a local garage soonest. Gladys ( my 1999 model) recently became thirsty and began consuming her water rather than recycling it around her engine. Examination at the dealership from where I purchased her confirmed that the head gasket had indeed gone.
Go through the various postings on this site relating to this issue and bring yourself up to speed on what is required, then take said knowledge to the garage with you and 'casually' let them know that you know what's required.

Good luck.
