Transfer box oil seal can leak for a long time without serious consequenses....... I had a leaking one for months.

However.... I am neither a mechanic nor an expert... I am just saying what my experience was.

In the end I sent my 12 year old under the motor to sort it out.

Is he available for hire. Got a couple of chimneys that need sweeping :D

Right.
I had the same problem. My mate said change the rubber seal and ****ty felt pad (what's that for!)
All seemed god for a couple of weeks.....Now started a slow drip again!!!

James mentioned don't use felt thing use silicone...could this be it?

James knows more n I do... but... \i have been told that where a felty thing is used it is for a reason. Gasket just wouldn't do the job. For the sake of a few pence i would comply!

They would have to be BOG chimneys since he is a big lad (12 years and 5'10)

However... if the money is right or payment with a few series 3 spares I reckon he would be up there like a rat up a errr... drainpipe!

oil can leak along shaft to flange, felt seal or rubber seal as used on borg warners or silicone .silicones just more certain to seal

i had the same problem, it was my output seal. even though the seal is gone it can be a pain in the ass to get off sometimes. so what i done was use a hacksaw blade and cut half way through the seal, then it just popped off with a screwdriver. easy enough job though.

Hi I am replacing the hand brake shoes on my landrover 90. I have removed the brake drum and found the shoes where covered in oil from the transfer box. So I removed the hand brake back plate assembly to gain access to the oil seals. But I am unable to undo the nut holding the rear flange to the transfer box.
I tried the following:
  • I tried by undoing just using a socket set but then the shalf started to turn but not the nut.
  • So I locked the diff then tried which helped but the shaft is still rotating when i put any weight on the socket set. (front wheels are on the ground when doing this)
does this mean i need a new transfer box or am I OK any suggestions would be very much appreciated. :confused:

it cant be in diff lock then ,try turning the nut were linkage enters the box clockwise as looking down on it ,it may need to turn a bit to engage

I managed to undo the nut using an Impact driver, managed to remove the rear hub and found no felt washer behind the metal washer so I have replaced both seals and started to reassemble.

....hmmm, froze my bits off yesterday and just could not shift the output nut..... rats!

Cleaned the major oil deposits, no wonder it was rolling with handbrake full on! Will have to put it all back together and have another go when warmer and I have made up a lever to hold the flange against undoing the wretched thing........ Grrrrr.:(

Still, the uj's in the rear prop are 100% fine so one job less to do... A
