well the s3 made the return trip from Exeter without breaking down :D

looks like the rear hub seals have gone which I am guessing is related to the diff incident a few months ago.

More to the point it seems to make a large oil deposit on the road which looks to be coming out of the breather on top of the engine.

doesn't seem to be, smokes out of the tube when the cap is off, if I leave the engine running there seems to be a fractional vacuum if I put my hand over the filler neck. unless the pressure builds over the trip - takes her about 4 hours from Exeter to here

Both hub seals gone the same time, check axle breather is clear.
Even a small amount of oil can look a lot spread over the road.
Try putting a catcher tray underneath after the next run. You have checked the dipstick ?

yes checked the dipstick and put 2 litres in when it returned, it was on max when it went back down after xmas.

axle breather was replaced the other year, guessing when the diff went the axle had been getting hot and fried the seals, passenger side is much worse than drivers but as that is closest to the diff I suppose that is the easiest route out.

given it a good dousing in brake cleaner and changed the rocker gasket as I had one lying around and it also looked suspect. fingers crossed
