Just towed my 1670 kg caravan to Hols and back (250 miles towing) without any problems but noticed black oil on drive this morning. On checking noticed a lot of oil has been forced out of intercooler pipe (from EGR) rad end. Could something be blocked?? Not towed for 18 months so could it be a build up that's cleared? Only kicks out smoke (not massively) when booting (which is not very often).
Current mileage 138,000 and year 2000

Thanks in advance.

Normal to have some oil in turbo hoses. Leaking means loose clips. Remove the hoses clean and seal properly with a little Hylomar. Make sure clips are tight. Of course you could always remove the cam cover and clean out the oil separator and vent valve. That may reduce oil in turbo hoses. Also when was the last time the intercooler was rinsed out?

Hi Wammers,
Have taken off the cam cover - the oil separator (I assume metal gauze) is thick with oil & vent valve probably same. Can these be cleaned or is it best to renew? As for the intercooler, I've never touched it in 50,000 miles and I'm not sure it was beforehand. Will this have damaged turbo? Could another problem cause all this oil in cover?

Thanks for your help.

They can be cleaned don't use anything to aggressive on the vent valve. Soak in Paraffin or a degreaser. Should not have damaged turbo, intercooler should be flushed out every 48,000 miles so it's overdue a clean. Again Paraffin or better still Acetone but don't put that near the vent valve.

Well cleaned everything out and took it on a 400 mile journey yesterday (Sat) to Weymouth and back and no leaks (except small amount out of filler cap). Looks like I've averaged over 25 mpg for the journey (mostly motorway but 140 miles busy and hilly 'A' roads plus busy busy Bristol).
Thanks for your help Wammers :)
