Morning all,

I am getting ready to put an oil change on my new to me 90. It has a 2.5 NA and this is my first diesel. I am used to putting 10W30 in my other car but I think I read that the diesel requires something different (thicker). Can you please point me in the right direction? I am looking for something good quality/reputation or recomended.

Thanks again Doug

How many miles has your engine done? These engines are old technology, they really are tractor engines! You want to change it's oil regularly with a fairly basic middle of the road oil, as MHM says 20W50, that would be ideal, anything in the 10-20w30-50 mark, although a lower first figure will help with cold starting. Lots of additives will start knocking loose deposits in the oil galleries and before you know if you have MORE oil leaks as it removes seals that have been formed and in some cases can be quiet detrimental to the running of the engine.

high detergent oil wont harm your seals ,a clean engine internally will last longer than a dirty one, especiall 2.5,we used to rebuild lots of these at a local reconditioners and the dirty ones were all ways the most worn in every way,you can tell if oil isnt detergent enough when stripping them with the oil on your hands ,there nothing inside the woudnt do better clean ,flush it first if seems reall dirty ask at local motor factors, the one garages use for good detergent mineral oil

I didn't say it would harm the seals, I said it knocks away deposits in the oil galleries therefore removing seals that have been formed by the deposits. You wash them away and old gaskets and o rings that have lasted this long start leaking because the deposits were helping to make the seal.

James, I cannot agree more with your statement that a clean engine will last longer, however if the damage has been done, you sometimes need to limit your actions to resolve it or you can end up with a bigger mess.
