Hi everyone. A while ago, I bought a converter thingy off eBay to convert the oil filter canister to a more modern screw on type of filter. It's a hefty lump of metal. Does anyone know if I need a gasket to seal it to the block?

Unless it has another method of keeping the oil in like an O ring then yes I would have thought but I've no idea what it looks like or where it fits.
Pics?

If you don't put in some form of gasket you are quite likely going to end up with a mess

Oil pressure should be signifcant (!)

One thing to consider - I don't know if this has already been done in your adapter - is some form of pressure relief function. Well designed filter assemblies have some form of pressure relief to make sure oil goes through the lubricating system even though a filter is clogged. (I think that's been designed into the original Land Rover filter assembly and not somewhere in the block - but that too ought to be checked:- Sorry bit of a civil servant move this one "someone should do something about it" but I ain't got the book to hand!)

I've never seen a gasket for sale, hence me asking but I could make one easily enough. I'm not sure if it has a pressure relief valve built in, I'll have to look at it. The problem is, I've put it in one of my many landy parts storage areas and I can't find it currently. What happens in my house is this; I order a part and it duly arrives, I open the box to check the part then I leave it in the hall ready for me to put it away when I next go into the garage. If it hasn't moved after a couple of hours the wife says "I hope you aren't planning on leaving that there". If I haven't moved after a couple of hours of her saying that, she bloody hides it somewhere and swears she hasn't touched it. After a week or so, I can't remember if I've moved it or she has. I must have hundreds of pounds worth of parts currently on the missing list. I bought a hand throttle a couple of years ago and I have no idea where it is now.

The main reason I asked about the gasket is that the original filter holder malarkey doesn't seem to have a gasket fitted.

Col
it should have theres a slightly different gasket for both types of filter housing to block, 2 round holes early paper element type and later oval for canister filter type

The housing gasket used to come in an engine gasket set so if you have done engine work in the past you may have one in left overs [ If like me you are a bits hoarder ]

I'll have to have a look in my gasket storage area. I've not bought a complete kit but I do tend to buy gaskets when I see em on eBay.
