I have an irritating oil drip. Its not especially bad but I hate the tell-tale patch on the garage floor.

Its a P38 2001 4.0 petrol - the Thor variant.

Whilst there is signs of oil right under the bottom back to front of gearbox I think it is coming from front of engine and blowing back. Reason being that the drip on garage floor is always under front of engine, although there is never enough to actually see the flow path.

I would guess it is coming from front crank seal?

How easy is it to change the front crank seal and is it necessary to remove the radiator etc...

I've had a look at RAVE and for post 99 models it doesn't mention radiator etc. It does mention special Land Rover tools, are these essential.

Cheers,
Steve

Mines a 2000 4.0 thor and it does exactly the same. Its a new oil seal on the front crank.
Whilst your at it change the sump gasket. The rad will have to come off , so when thats off change the pipes to the pump. water pump will have to come off so give it a good look over.
MOT next year states no oil leaks so get it MOTd before chgristmas so not to fail on oil leak

Did no one warn you before you bought it about the old adage:

Land Rovers don't so much leak as mark their territory!

I know but there is no need for oil leaks. I have a 1969 series and that drips absolutely nothing now. New seals both ends of crank, sump n timing case gaskets cured it...but that was simple to do.

Thanks Willos,
do you know if it is possible to change the seal without a "special removal tool" and without removing the case?
