Aye im like an owl lol..

How are you ;)
I'm good thanks, sweetie. Just on ebay ordering marshmallows images.jpeg

ZF5hp24 oil is a straw colour when new..

Brown when dirsty and black when horrible..

I'd also consider the headgasket, not an impossibility with the M62
Jeez dont say that.. I was kinda put off the idea with all the diggers pointing at the oil cooler.. I'm really trying not to think of head gasket.. I'm sickened to think a whole engine or tranny could go caput over a stupid oil cooler set up.. aargh

It could be worse. You could be having these issues but driving a Fiat ( or make another lesser make ) ;)

The L322 Tranny Cooler is plumbed into the cooling system and incorporates a thermostatic valve that opens once the coolant gets to a certain temp and allows it to flow through the cooler...

If there is a crack in the cooler between the oil way and the water way, while the engine is running the transmission fluid pressure is higher than the cooling system pressure and will pass oil into the cooling system....once the engine is off, hydraulic pressure will return to 0 quickly (as the pump is no longer generating flow and pressure etc....but the cooling system is still under pressure (only about 14-15psi) until it cools and if the crack is big enough, this 14/15psi could force water into the transmission fluid....

It is rare-ish on the L322, but not uncommon on the BMW models - particularly the E46 for some reason!!

I would not discount the head gasket as this is much more of a common reason for oil in the coolant (and vice versa) than a fecked tranny cooler....

Thanks for the reply saint.. I'm praying it's the cooler. Bought one today and gonna fit it and flush the system all afternoon.. otherwise in your opinion could a moderate DIYer do the gasket job? Specialist tools? Etc

resetting Vanos timing is required, i've done a writeup somewhere it's quite straight forward.

As for removing the head thats relatively straight forward reverse torx sockets required for the timing chest bolts and various others.

Best replace the timing chain guide rails and tensioner while in there.

Victor Reinz do a good gasket set of the L322 M62.

Oh lord it sounds expensive and time consuming

Not really, just a clear approach to the job is required.

If you're not confident get a specialist to do it..
Well I'm good with my hands just never done it before.. and in fairness with all the money I've been pouring into the car I cant afford a specialist to do the job... either way if my gearbox has water in it I'm parking her up unfortunately

Pop the filler plug out when it's running not when it's off as the ATF will píss out..

catch some in a cup if poss and check the colour, i like to smear it on some clear white paper then you can clearly see the colour..

Or drain come out via the sump plug, make sure you have some spare fluid to top up though..

Will do... cheers.. I'll let you know later what happened

Ok peeps so I followed the thread on how to change the oil cooler and i dont know if I'm happy or sad.. when i took off the oil pipes a cappuccino milky fluid which is the gear box oil came out.. meaning my head gasket is fine but now I have a contaminated gear box.. my gut tells me its fecked but all who I've asked said it's fine since I caught it straight away and nothing affected its operation.. so I opened the sump and got about 5-6 litres out of it then called a friend on how to get the remaining oil out of the torque converter and what he advised was since the oil cooler was still off start the engine for literally 5 seconds then turn back off so I did that and about another litre came out of the oil cooler pipe.. I'm gonna fit the cooler back in the morning and refill but I was wondering what should I do to get every bit of contamination out of the GB I mean really flush it. Or is it fecked no matter what I do? Any ideas or experience with this?

Check Bemble's posts. You need to change the oil and filter 3 times to get the majority flushed, something like that. Best check with the gurus if it is OK to stick some Lucas Transmission Fix through it too on one of the flushes.
