With the sump plug isn't there a bigger risk of stripping the threads on the TD5? Rather than other engines..

Hold on isnt your avatar a bit suspect.surely should be a bottle of the black stuff.

its there due to recent events in my life , see thread " explosions and injuries " in AG if you haven't already

what black stuff?

oh and OP I wouldent dare use an impact gun on it , just use a big bar and a decent socket ! providing that dosent round

try with a strong mole grips

I changed my oil the day before yesterday. The sump plug on mine is reset and I could only just get the socket onto the plug. There is no way I would be able to get a pair of mole grips onto it. I know that the thread had been stripped a few years back and Rockingham Landrovers replaced the sump so maybe mine is a little different to the standard.

Guinnes.
OMG.thats bad.
Reminds me of a young lad in ireland.we were sat on a bench outside the church when this lad of about 12 came running past.in his arms he was holding four or five bottles of pop.it was in the days when it came in glass bottles (1968).they just exploded after he had gone past.jeeesus the blood the mayhem. i was only a 7 year old and can still see every detail.

If it is a steel plug in an aluminum sump that perhaps explains the problem. Has any one tried PTFE tape round the plug when refitting it to prevent the two metals touching?

Yes I do that every time with all sump plugs. It ensures a good leak-free closure and a straightforward opening next time.

Glass in any shape always makes me nervous as can do so much damage.
And now a confession,my discovery is actually oslo blue.my son changed the colour and the land rover badge to bend over.though we are genuinely considering a respray that colour.

So, phoned Guy Salmon, they quoted £750!!!! Claimed it needs a 12 yr service. It had a major service by the prior owner in May last year so not with it. The oil cost along was more than the parts and oil I bought!!!! So bugger that, phoned Kwik fit- £99 bucks. Thanks for nothing!!'
