Oil Change/under Engine Cover

hi guys,have just done my 36k oil change,td4,read all the relavant posts about removal of the cover thingy,drilled out all the rivets as described,all fine untill i got to the four rivets at the front edge,tried everything in my powers to reach the b""""""ds,not having a 3 foot drill bit to get at them from the engine compartment, needless to say i failed,ended up really losing it and just ripping the f""""""ng thing off,only then did i find that the inner is reinforced with fibreglass(i have severe skin reactions to fibreglass)still itching 3 days later,the rest went fine filter and drain no probs,couldnt believe the state of the oil though,
go on have a laugh on my behalf i dont mind,was it just my lack of patience,or was there an easier way of getting those pesky front four off,
its off for good now,lol
 
don,t want to pi** on yer stawberries but I got miself from a car boot a little electric gadget that you clip to the battery, consists of a little electric motor(12v) a flexible hollow tube and another about 2ft long with a wire archimedes type screw in it fastened to the motor. This is semi flexible, both pipes are similar size and make to plastic ws washer pipe. All I do is take out dipstick, slide tube with screw in down dipstic pipe all the way to the sump bottom, put other tube into empty oil tin clip onto battery and hey ho out comes the oil wi out avin to crawl about underneath. Takes about 15-20mins to drain all the oil plenty o time for a cuppa and cig.
Sure beats tekin half o car t'bits and no mess.

any sort of suction container with about a 5mm tube would do :)

but why the hell you go to all the trouble of drilling out rivets i dont know :(

its held up by 8 bolts surly you would find it easier undoing those
 
it was the front four that messed me up,was ok up to then,theyre defo not bolted onto anything,just top riveted to the twin skin skirt alley underider,(rivetted uppermost not on the bottom)didnt want to drill through as i wasnt sure why it was double skinned,looks much better on my garage floor anyway.....i can actually check for leaks etc now
 
Iv done the same and removed my undertray. Had to chisel the rivets off by removing the side splash plates. Oil changes are a 20 min job now and can be done without jack or axle stands (im quite thin!). The only thing is my aux belt looks a little exposed (my FL is a L series diesel). I will monitor.
As for sucking oil up through dipstick, do they manage to remove all the oil. I have always been under the impression that dropping the oil is better than sucking. It gives 'more' of an oil change. Anyone got any thoughts on that?
 
old ways are always the best trooper, best thing ya can do fer any doozle is regular oil un filter change , i modified the silly under cover bit with stainless quick release fings ,some on here drill a large hole where the sump drain plug is for quick oil change, i'm gonna do the same on my next change , but gonna make a cover for it as well. . . .:)
 
The thing that bothers me the most is the stupid aluminium gasket they put on the sumpscrew. I had about 10 spare copper gaskets from my old 190E and where the size was allright it wasn't thick enough to fill the gap between the sumpbody and the screw, even with it screwed in completely there was still about 2 mm play. Thinking of keeping such an old aluminium gasket as example and try to find some extra ones in an autoshop.
 
the alley washers are pennies form l/r i was really surprised,and you know youve got the right
