I normally -

Put a Bottle of engine flush in
start it
let it warm up to temp
turn it off
drain oil
replace sump plug washer
tighten sump plug up
change filter
refill with oil
Run it for a minute (To fill the filter unless you are going to pre-fill it)
Check oil level again and top up if needed.
 
I always let my engine warm up fully before draining any oil but be VERY carful. Once you remove the sump plug, the oil will come shooting out quicker than **** off a stick, and it'll come out horizontally, landing at least 60cm away from the sump! Have a big, big catch tank / bucket ready and plenty of news paper down on the floor because it will make a mess. It'll burn you nicely too if you get it on your skin or down your jacket sleeve like I did once :rolleyes: Under no circumstances should you ever use engine flush! It removes so called 'harmful' carbon deposits in your engine, the truth is that carbon deposits do more good than harm. The carbon molecules work with the oil to lubricate your engine better (think how well graphite dust from pencil sharpening lubricates a dry surface) and it helps to keep your seals in tact. A lot of people who use engine flush stuff find that oil seals start failing a few hundred miles after use because any carbon / coke build up that has plugged the gaps has been removed.

I'd also suggest that you use 10W40 Semi-Synthetic diesel engine oil. Millers Oils is the stuff that I use, it's about £13 for 5 litres and it's really good stuff - made in Yarksheer and it's tractor spec (I am lead to believe). You'll need between 6 and 6.5 litres and don't forget to fill your new oil filter at least half way before you put it on.

I've seen two engines go bang shortly after using engine flush (they were Shogun's though:rolleyes:), as it does tend to move a lot of crud, personally I prefer a 10 minute run to get engine /oil up to temp, park up and drain 10 min's later...

I had to service a 2.0L (Pinto Engine) Ford Transit the other day. Checked Emmisions (Failed the MOT for this), Stuck some engine flush in and let it run for 10 Minutes... Checked Emmisions again and guess what... It passed ;). Changed Oil and filter, Checked again and lower still. My opinion of the stuff is that if you have a engine you suspect has not been serviced often it is worth shoving a bottle in, if you know it has been serviced often then there is not point.
 
I used to run my 2.5 petrol 110 on 15/40w as it's difficult to get 20/50w out here, when I sold it, 4 hrs before the guy came to pick it up (and pay me) the kin crank oil seal started leaking (dripping badly) so shot off and got some 20/50w dead sharp and did an oil change-ooooff job done, stopped dripping:D
 
OK, I know this is very basic stuff and a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string?' -type question, but how often should you reckon to change the oil?

Reason I ask is that I only do about 3000 miles / year in my 200tdi, 99% on tarmac (shame), and the engine is relatively new (30k-40k, and less than 3yrs old). It's driven at least every other weekend to make sure everything keeps moving, although many of the journeys are only a few miles (enough to get to working temperature though).

Does the oil 'go off' over time?
 
ok i have put in 7l of rimula shell 15w 40..managed to unscrew oil filter by hand...just...there was a small amount of spillage from the filter.1/2 a litre or so at a geuss....was fookin hot too...

refitted new filter with coperslip on the thread an a small wipe of silicone grease on the rubber seal.
housing was in good nick after a wipe clean so no need to reem the threads on the filter mount.
oil light was on for 5 seconds after starting but soon went out.I didnt bother with filling the new filter.

got phone piccys so must go buy a lead for that.

all in ok except fitting my wheel on the bonnet has made a death trap so i need to make a beefed up stay.my mate got a bonnet slam off a wheeled job and he was in a bad way....
