Hi

I have a rebuilt 3.5 efi engine in my car that a 3.9block was used. There's all fine done a few thousand miles sounds so good.

Here's the problem oil capacity 5.7 litres but if I put that in dipstick shows no oil it takes more than that to show up. If rebuild is on a 3.9 block could it Be my old dipstick is wrong length to read acvurately .I've never heard of 3.9 /4.0 having bigger capacity and my new engine has old sump on it which is original 3.5 so I'm sure capacity is still 5.7 any one know different or can some one measure dipstick on a 3.9 from top to hashed area and also from hashed area to finger pull. Please.

I'm now thinking my car has been over filled with oil for a while due to wrong dipstick length

Many thanks

Kevin

I would have thought so- but does the 3.9 have a different dipstick tube arrangement making it further to reach sump or anything? Trouble is engine was done 12 years a go and I can't remember who it was or id ask them

So I'm confused a bit/lot local land rover bloke reckoned it takes more than 5.7 he thought efi ones were 7 litre capacity

I had a look on lrcat, they only list the classic from 84>
Both dipsticks on those two V8's have the same dipstick. Sorry I can't tell you any more on the earlier models upto 84..

no its the same block

I thought there was a difference in the tube length, don’t know why or where from. Might have been a dream;)

Hi

Thanks all for the info. Really appreciated.

I thought they were same block just presumed they drilled out smaller bores to make it my 3.5 efi rather than 3.9.efi although 3.9 doesn't have capped threads on 2 of its sump bolt holes whilst 3.5 are. So was just wondering if any other small changes in this case regarding dipstick tubes

I will do my oil change with 5.7 litres and see what happens on dipstick

Don't get caught with it:D

I will go out the backway :D:D

Here I found this and they say short for 3.5 need to look for 3.9. As there seems to be a Right old mix Going on.
