Hi all,
I'm new to the group so be kind. I've recently got myself my first Landy (dream for many years) and am wanting to do a full oil change. I've spent the past three days researching with people telling me I'm wrong several times on Facebook and various forums bringing up different information (some of which may be out of date. She's a 1995 300TDI with R380 gearbox. What I'm thinking so far is as follows. Please correct and advise as necessary! Many thanks in advance

Engine: Castrol GTX 15W40
Gearbox: MTF94 (smithandallan)
Transfer box and diffs: Fully Synthetic 75W90 (smithandallan)

does this seem ok?
Many thanks!

bog standard 15W40 as it gets changed regularly, would need to look at the rest but I got it from the same place, seem to remember GL4 being in the spec for transfer and diffs

15/40 is the kiddy, lots of land rover owners like to UPGRADE the parts they use incl oil and the engine simply wasnt designed for thin oil.
Diff and tfer box whatever takes your fancy 80/90, 85/90 its all good enough, again cheap and cheerful mineral will do just fine.
For the gearbox I cant recommend the difflock syn lube enough as its the nuts and really helps the gearchanges especially 1st to 2nd when cold, there are cheaper alternatives if you look.
If you do some googling on the R380 box its got some interesting history and people have tried every type of oil you can possibly imagine.

Did you choose the Smith and Allan oils yourself, or did you ask them for advice?
I have the same engine and box as you and they recommended for my:
gearbox their mtf94
transfer box and diffs their ep 80w 90
I've had these oils in for a few thousand miles now. Seem ok, but I'm with lynall 100% with the Difflock oils. I've used them for about 9 to 10yrs now and their gearbox oil transforms the R380. I read good things about the Smith and Allan oils here on LZ. They may be good, but the Difflock oil is something else. It's expensive, but I'll be going back to it.
