Decades ago an acquaintance of mine ran an 'eighties Cherokee Chief. I thought it was a great looker & the 5.9L mill pulled his heavy tandem axle caravan like it was one of those titchy trailers people use for taking the garden rubbish to the tip.
Perhaps I need to get my own coat & join you

nb. guys take note that unlike 'M' I have not mentioned the word J..p

Great till the heads go on them, nearly every one we looked at the other week had serious engine trouble or was about to. End up being just a large paperweight on the drive way. :D

I had a diesel Cherokee for some years, not the most comfortable vehicle but lots better than a 2A. very good tower and dare I say it, actually more capable on slippery surfaces and mild off road than a landrover due to the locking diff and limited slip rear diff meaning it needed three wheels to lose grip before it came to a halt.
I'll get mi coat:rolleyes:

I know that GM V8 diesels have their problems, I've not heard of petrol V's being a problem, but I could stand corrected ;)

I looked at over 10 with my son, all had various engine issues in the past or where non runners due to it. The few that looked ok were stupid money for an old vehicle.
If you didn't mind tinkering yourself with them then its ok, but the ones i looked at the owners complained that specialist size tools were needed.
Parts off the shelf did not always fit.
I could not let my son buy something that would probably be off the road on ramps more than on it lol.
Lovely comfortable interior though for waiting in for the tow truck :p:p

The only AMC unit worth any recognition is the old 242 6 banger.

My Dad had an cherokee XJ and apart from terminal rot and it having the 2000-2001 headcrack issue it wasn't too bad...

Still wouldn't have one if you gave me the cash for one.. ;)
