Freelander 06 plate, had a grating nois from offside front drive shaft, turned out to be inner joint but not, the cup the cv sits in, (now driveshaft is out) wafts all over the place, if I pull the cup out of the IRD, will I find a broken bearing behind it or am I looking at something nasty? Not had a landy before so don't really know what to expect when I pull cup out of IRD, any help would be much appreciated

It is known on Freelander for the inner CV on the drive shaft to wear which then wears its support bearing in the IRD.

If this is the case its a pretty major problem and you could be quite close the the IRD being completely destroyed (if the diff gears strip/jam).

If this is the case you need to get the drive shaft and support bearing replaced. I don't know if the bearing can be replaced with the IRD in situ or whether it needs to be removed and stripped.

When you say "now driveshaft is out" - do you mean the prop shaft to the rear axle?

Some other input needed, but I wouldn't drive the car at the moment until you know more.

The IRD needs a rebuild if you're lucky, or replacement if not. It depends on how much damage has been done. Don't fit replacement propshafts until A the IRD is sorted, and B the VCU is tested, and C you have 4 identical tyres fitted.
