Having realised the value of an OEM fuel filter I am now after the same for an air filter swap for my 2003 Freelander td4.

I see a few advertised as OEM but when I found an OEM service kit that had a Mahle filter in it I noticed it did not look like the usual fluff version but looked like ribbed paper.

Anyone know if these are available as single items without rest of service kit, and if so where from?

I have drawn a blank with google.

Lots of owners after a bit better throttle response remove the fluffy cover, as it's actually quite restrictive, and isn't needed in non desert regions. ;)

Just followed link. I saw that one before. I suppose it is a replacement for the original. Maybe the image I saw is from old stock. I suppose I could look at one of those performance filters.

if you do .. be wary of the oiled type ..
as the oil can mess up the maf sensor
i've had 2 .. have since ditched them in favour of the Mahle type that Nodge68 posted ..
with fluffy surround removed ..

Can you confirm that the fluffy element can be removed from this filter leaving a paper filter and therefore yielding a tad more performance?
the quicker the air moves through the maf sensor .. [ on the fl1/td4 ]
the quicker the engine will respond to driver demand via the go-pedal
.. particularly noticeable at lower rpm ..

probably makes little difference at higher rpm ..
 
just to add .. whilst i'm here ..
de-restricting the exhaust gas flow helps as well
if not a decat operation .. then changing the exhaust backbox
to a straight through design ..
turbo will act quicker .. and draw more air into the intake system faster
again .. improving go-pedal response ..

Yeah I’ve been looking at MM’s stainless exhaust system but it brings another question about how much louder it becomes. My mid section and cat are fine but the back box needs replacing.

not by much :) ..
ok with mot ..
never had complaints from neighbours .. or anyone else ..
certainly much much quieter than a petrol engine with a similar exhaust setup ..
just my p.o.v. .. i quite like it .. can judge rpm by ear ..
much prefer the sound actually .. ..
a taste acquired from driving cat-powered open exhaust hgv's
before emission controls ruined the experience ;-]

audio be from a canon camera located on the front passenger seat back-rest ..
[ i think p.window was open .. not 100% sure ..
[ drivers window was .. if i remember correctly
at 1.22 i go over a stone walled bridge .. you'll hear the reflections ..

btw : must admit i dislike the 'tone' at 3000 rpm
it's not very loud . . just a nasty tone .. 'raspy' .. ;-(
much prefer the sound of a petrol v8 .. or v12 .. at those rpm ..

The sound of my own straight through system was little deeper, especially at idle. Being a turbo, a huge amount of sound energy is absorbed by the turbo, so noise isn't an issue.
