I'm confused......

I have not had the vehicle long and on my first tank full I got 17mpg!!!

Not believing that a 300TDi could do only 17 to the gallon I have plugged my gps in and gone for a drive. The speedo is reading spot on....30mph is 30mph on the gps and 50mph is 50mph etc. But I drove 2 miles according to the odometer but my gps says I did 3 miles.

If it is reading 1/3 under then I would be doing 26mpg...a lot more believable.

So why, if the speedo is right is the odometer wrong?

Neil

Your tires I'm guessing are bigger than the originals,

That would cause a false reading on your odometer,

That or the odometer has been fiddled with

Standard tyres....235/85 R16.

If the tyres were the wrong size then the speed would be wrong as well. As the gearbox is turning the speedo at the right speed to give me the correct reading then I would expect the mileage to be correct as well.....

Can't see how the mileage can be out when the speed is correct....

Sounds like the odometer has been tampered with.

I could see someone fiddling with an odometer to make it read less mileage than you have actually done so the vehicle will appear as a low mileage one but what would be the point in having it read less mileage than you are driving?

The cable from the gearbox drives the speedometer that moves the odometer round. As the speedo is reading right I must have internal problems with the gears.....mustn't I?

I would guess someone has been meddling or it is just broken a little inside.

GPS checked mine over 20 miles and it was spot on for speed and for mileage.:)

Cheers

The Guy I bought my Defender off had a cam belt go on it which ended up in a total engine rebuild. He tried to zero the Odometer on it, it never worked properly after that. I ended up buying a new speedo. I got one on ebay for £45 which was in Kilometers which suited me fine but there were others in MPH

A search on the web finds I am not the only person to have had this problem!

I would change the gauge but as it makes no practical difference to me I will wait until a cheap one appears on ebay with a similar mileage to mine.
