Today I got my filters via parcel force for a full service I had booked with my garage servants. So to knock down the price of said service I informed garage i will get the engine oil. Now not being a idiot I checked my Haynes and other manual to confirm correct engine oil. 10W/40 is the recommendation for my late model 2002 td4. Ah but when I go to enquire via reputed retailer computer they inform me 5W/30. Naturally I went by my original books but why is this so which cause confusion.

Lots of references to 5W/30 on a search and it appears that may be the LR recommended oil for 'later' TD4s.

Appears also that the colder the climate 5W/30 becomes more appropriate.

I've just put 10W/40 in my L Series - that appeared to be the consensus and Shel Helix synthetic was on silly price of about £14 for 4L - so that's what went in!

I'll have a quiet chat with garage servants to see what they put in 10w/40 or the 5w/30. How would improvement be with the 5w/30 compared to 10w/40.
5w30 is used by manufacturers to improve Mpg. Being thinner, it causes less drag to the mechanical components, compared to a 5w40. This helps Mpg slightly, but it's use comes at a potential cost. Being a lighter oil than a 5w40, it spills out of bearings faster. This gives less support to the bearing, interesting long term wear. So once an engine is out of warranty, the faster the switch to a heavily grade, the better for the bearings.

Very interesting, so lucky I was aware of the playing safe in the first place by the book. Just goes to show how easy one could knacker an older engine thinking you had good advise from a retailer computer. Have a boil sweet.:D
