No. The increase in battery capacity does not affect anything. It just gives you more cranking power, and allows you to leave your lights on longer without the engine running.

How do you know that the battery isn't charging? If you have a multimeter you should get between 13.9 and 14.5 at the battery with the engine running.

I'm only getting 12.57 across the battery. Which i know from having alternator problems before means it's not charging properly.

Once again if you have a multimeter, check the resistance between the battery -ive and the engine block. It should read below 3 Ohms. If it's more than that, you are still suffering from poor earthing.

I get a reading of between 0 and 0.02 Ohms which I assume means I have a good earth?

I don't understand electrics at all. All I know is they need a +ve and -ve with a good earth.

It is possible you have a dodgy connection. But in my experience that sounds like your alternator is shafted as it ain't charging.

Check the connections on the back of your alternator.

Also if you are competant enough to measure current draw (not taking the ****, don't want you blowing your meter, melting your test leads and getting cross with me.)see what she is drawing. I had a relay to the glow plugs that was sticking, that was drawing about 6.5 amps, ate my battery over night but was only doing it sporadically so was a bitch to find. That doesn't account for lack of charge though. as i said that sounds like alternator.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately when it comes to electrics I don't know how to do much so I think I'm going to send in to be repaired.

I have a few other faults with the electrics as well. Not sure if they are linked. My three dials on my dash don't work at all but there is a positive feed and a good earth to all three (fuel, temp and clock) and my hazards when turned on stay on and don't flash as do my indicators. Something really isn't right somewhere.

It definately smacks of a dodgy connection. Plus if your voltages are down things like flasher units won't be driven, do you know anyone you can borrow a clamp meter off, that will help with checking current draws. Connections are easy to check yourself and time consuming for you to be paying for. Try hunting around first and then take it in if that turns nothing up.

Good luck.

Might sound a bit daft, but have you checked that all the connections to your alternator are sound ... especially the earth bond?

All it takes is a poor connection and it appears that the alternator is kaput, when it isn't!

I have given them a clean but haven't tested if they are any good. How would I go about testing them?

Put your meter across the battery terminals with your engine running. You should get between 13.8v and 14.4V across them.

I've done that and got 11.37v. Which is how I knew the battery wasn't charging. I thought you meant the terminal on the back of the alternator.

It should be the same at that terminal as at the battery. If not you may find that you have a wiring fault!

Finally got round to testing my alternator and I'm getting a reading of 0v. I run an earth straight back to the battery and tested both positives on the alternator and got no reading at all. I would assume my alternator is shot. That will be my 4th alternator in 8 months.
