Thanks for all your replies concerning getting under seal off, but when its off what next ? do i red oxide paint and then hammerite or just hammerite, or is there anything else to use ?
regards

Personally I wouldn't use a paint such as Hammerite on a chassis as it is too brittle.
A decent underseal such as Finagans Underseal (contains Waxoil) remains flexible which shruggs off stones and if it eventually does need to be touched up the old & new blend in with each other creating a good resistant coating.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say. 12-years ago I did the chassis on my current 90 with Finagans underseal (outside), Waxoil (inside) and the rear crossmember with Smoothright. 6-Years later I got rid of the Smoothright as it was blistering in a few places, I cleaned up the crossmember and treated with underseal and to this day every inspection as shown that underneath the coating the chassis is as sound as it was on the day it was treated (i.e. like new).

thanks for the replys, if i use a zinc based paint do i still use red oxide first ?

I'd use etch primer followed by some cheap top coat then dinitrol. Obviously remove any corrosion and old paint first and let it all dry thoroughly

there was no way i could get the surfaces clean enough to paint properly. the combination of old paint, old underseal, oil and muck just meant it wasnt going to happen without basically taking the damn thing apart; and even if you do get it clean enough on the parts which are accessible, how are you going to paint the chassis where you cant access?

i gave up and underseal/waxoyl the chassis areas and used the clear stuff around the body. still plenty to do, but id have been there months trying to properly paint it.
