Hi, I'm looking ofr some advice with a 1989 110 I bought 2 weeks ago. The 110 has been fitted with a 200tdi engine. The last job I need to do before the MOT is sort out a problem with the power steering. The symptoms are as follows:

The steering sticks when turning right but is ok when turning left. It's as if there is are stiff spots every 180deg turns of the steering wheel.

I have carried out the following:

All ball joints have been checked for play.
Steering damper has been removed.
All UJ's have been oiled.
The belt isn't slipping.
Fluid level is ok.
System has been bled.

I'm looking for any help identifying whether the problem is likely to lie with the pump or steering box.

The Landy has been stored for two years prior to me buying it.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Garry

My notchy steering was my U/Js , there was no play in them but they where seized , take off your shaft and make sure they are free to move as they should :) .

I had a simlar problem but mine was the pump not working.

Dont know if anyone on here can eliminate that idea incase i'm wrong.
Dont want you buying a pump to find its not that.

I had a very simlar problem with mine and it was a right bugger to locate, but by a proccess of ilimination I diagnosed a sh***ed steering box.
I bought a replacement from a forum member and fitted it the folowing day and it has transformed the car, as, apart from the notchyness, the steering feels much more precise.
I put the old one on the workbench (in a vice) and when I move the drop arm I can feel when it gets to a bit of resistance, so, if you were to disconect your drop arm ball joint you should be able to move the drop arm left and right and if it gets stiff at any point, then you know it's the steering box.

Get a can of WD40 and spray it over the steering cloumn U/J's. Turn the steering from one lock to another to work it in. Repeat his process 3 or 4 times. If the steering stops being notchy then it was the u/j's. If it carries on then it's the box.

If the WD40 trick does work, give it a couple of days to let the oil fully penetrate and then brush copper grease or failing that normal grease all over the u/j's to prevent it happening again.

Well I did a 'search FFS' for Notchy Steering and bugger me it worked :)
Who'd a thunk it that search thingy works.

Thanks Ratty ;)

394 days later, I did a 'search FFS' and found the solution. +1 for Ratty.

Half way to work this morning the steering suddenly got VERY stiff (fnar fnar). Checked the belt was still on (TD5 so I'm glad it was!) and that the fluid was ok so drove home to look on here. Sprayed the steering colomn UJs with WD40, worked it in and then took it for a drive. Problem solved!

Wish I'd known first though as that was a roadside repair which would've got me on my way in 5 mins.

Now is that the end of the issue or does it mean I'm going to need to replace a UJ or something soon?

Ideally you need to get some grease into em as the wd40 will dry up after a while.

There's nothing to stop you spraying wd40, squirting 3 in one oil or even engine oil over em at regular intervals to keep em lubed up.

This must be a landy virus going round the same thing happened to my 110 yesterday!!
The Q

Another proponent of the WD40 method here - replaced UJ for MOT, passed MOT but notchy as buck afterwards.

Skooshed it with WD40, good to go!
