Ok, so I've not got the horn. Well actually, I've got a horn, but there's nothing connected to it.

For whatever reason, one of the many POs of my 90 decided to disconnect it.

I've not had much luck reading up on what wires might be the right ones to reconnect, and so far I'm struggling to trace cables from the arm, to any sort of relay that might then head to the any of the numerous spare cables hanging about near the horn.

So, attached are photos the "unused" wires hanging about in the rough vicinity of the horn... do any of these look like they might be what I'm looking for? One is a lonely purple and green wire, the other is a bunch of wires (green, green+white, purple+white), and the other is a plug with 2 black wires and 1 green+black wire)

Or should I just start from scratch from the arm loom onward? Is there even a relay I should be looking for somewhere?

Any help appreciated.

The horn connection, usually, is on the passengers side. It is a single blue or purple wire with a trace colour if I remember correctly and it is just a single wire as horn earths locally. So maybe it is that lone one you found, but seems to be on the wrong side, but they were always changing things!

the wrong end of the stick
Great pun though, what with the horn being on the indicator stalk, etc.

Yeah, the information out there is horrific - mines an early 1987 90 - and looking in my range of different manuals and workshop books, etc. it's as if no one would ever need to know this!

Oh, so my horn is on the drivers side, but I should be looking for something on the passenger side?!

If not, I wonder if it's just that purple+green wire then in one of my pictures - I'll wire it up tonight and earth locally and see what happens

Well, I suspect that lone wire you found is the horn, it just "seems" to be on the wrong side.

There are lots of optional extras from the factory, or ROW spec electrical parts so a lot of these spares that seem to do nothing are tied into the.

My LR was fitted with a split charge loom from the factory, so it was interesting to note all the spilt charge connections are already there, you just need the heavier charge cable loom from LR and the relay.

Yeah, I had considered this - might have to rope her indoors into helping me if I want to do that. She'll enjoy that... not.
Sit the meter in the window, jam the red probe into the single connector and then jam the black somewhere it will get a good connection to earth.

According to Haynes manual, cable to horn should be purple with black trace. On late models black earth should also come from horn, on older earth is through horn body. Take a look behind grill for cable

Ah good, my mind does still remember these useless facts!

Don't know about the others without poring over circuit diagrams, but purple with green should be fusebox to heater blower motor

I think they made the wiring colours up as they went along! Depending what deal they could get on thinwall that week!

Well I found it, it was none of the ones I'd photographed!

It was however a purple wire on the passenger side, which had then been run all the way down to the front, connected to a piece of speaker wire, and routed round the front of the intercooler and radiator, and into the drivers side wing, and promptly cut off at some point!

At least the mystery is solved! Thanks dicsomainia for the passenger side hint, I would never have found it!

I was pretty certain it would be on the passenger side. The horn on mine is on the passenger side too.

I think where this is a 300tdi conversion, a lot of things have been moved about to accommodate, the horns being one of them. I'd just assumed they were in the original location, more fool me.

I wonder why it was disconnected by a po and how has it been getting through mots? Hope it doesn't catch fire when you use it.
