Evening all,not sure if my front diff or transfer box is on its way out,had a read on here and it seems it could be either,is testing as easy as removing the front prop and driving it to see if the loud whining goes away or have I missed something?

Got six of the eight nuts off no bother, thought it was all going rather well until it remembered it's a Disco and the last two rounded off  ran out of light so the big hammer and chisel will have to wait until tomorrow

You could always jack a wheel up (chock the other wheels first) and try to turn the raised wheel, it should turn without any bother. If it makes an 'orrible noise the diff is knakkered. Repeat for the other side too.

Taking the prop off will still result in 'orrible noise from either t/f box or diff as the diff will be being turned by the wheels unless you pull the half shafts out (not sure how easy the front ones are to take out, sorry).

Also, don't forget to engage the diff lock if you've got a prop off or you'll go no where :p

Been doing exhaust at same time so was gonna try it with diff lock on when back end was off floor to finish exhaust.Thought dropping the front prop while doing front section of exhaust would be simples, what a stupid thought that turned out to be  still, you live and learn

Couldn't get in with the mole grips, big hammer and chisel did the job though  I replace any nuts and bolts I remove with new ones, the old ones are normally shagged or rusted to buggery and for what they cost it seems daft not to.It's pretty much a certainty that I'll be taking it to bits again when something else gives up the ghost so might as well make life a bit easier for myself
