Hi all ive juts been under my disco today and noticed that there is a small amount of engine oil coming from the bell housing drain hole i guess this means my crank bearings seals are going. any one got any experaince on this?

mines been doin it for the last year, i just keep topping up as the cost of the oil is cheaper than the repair, i'll fix it when it eventually dies.

Did mine not so long back. Haynes book of lies tells you to drop the gear box, but after some advice on here I pulled the engine. Spent an afternoon getting ready, draining coolant, removeing all the crap necessary, then did engine out, new seal fitted, new clutch fitted and back in all in 1 day. Refitted all extra bits following morning and running again. Had help from a good friend during strip out and replacement which made life easier.

I would recommend buying a genuine LR seal, cost about £18 as I would hate to find a pattern part was NFG. Seemed logical to have a clutch to fit too, while engine was out. As it happened the old clutch was on its last legs and needed doing anyway. With engine out, its also a lot easier to do cambelt, so you may want to consider doing that at the same time if its due before too much longer

I think dripping oil from one part of the engine or gearbox comes as standard on Land rovers. I would'nt worry about it unless oil consumption started to become an issue. :)

Having owned 1 for only about a month I've come to the conclusion that Land Rovers have a "Constant loss system" fitted as standard. look at it this way... the engine will never fail due to not doing an oil change :D

we if im onist its the only problem ive had with leaks. my old man has a SD1 V8 sat doing nothing out the bad of his house might see if he is up for donating it my way as it should drip straight in should it not?? not sure how i would go on with the log book and MOT's etc

Yeah mines the same - was using my neighbours car bay for a few weeks just there and soon realised how bad it is! (usually park on the road and it doesn't really shop up). Every time I parked it it drops enough to make a palm sized oil mark.

I reckon in a week I loose about a mugfull of oil - I just top it up and when I do the gearboxes in the summer I will change it then.
