Hi folks,

Picked up my defender at the start of the week from down Birmingham way, drove it the 460 mile back to its new home back in Scotland, the temperature gauge never lifted more than two needle widths from the bottom and the heaters never blew a drop of warm air the whole way home, it's the 19J TD that's in it.
Any ideas

Cheers

Brian

Possibly thermostat stuck open or missing but temp guages vary wildly and are not the most reliable so it's possible engine is heating up ok but the heater matrix is blocked or an air lock or even bypassed (In which case it probably leaks), or stuck temp control valve (if a 19J is similar to a 2 1/4)

Check top hose temp. Should stay cold for a good while after starting and then heat up suddenly as the stat opens.

The heater should blow warm air after a few minutes even if the engine is running cool. Feeling hoses in and out should tell you whats going on

Ok, will look into it
Only time I got a puff of warm air through the heaters was when I made a pit stop, shut it down, restarted it it was kind of warm for 15 secs then straight back to cold air again
