Noticed that my 1991 200TDI Gearbox (believe its the LT77) is a bit noisy especially in first and sometimes difficult to select gears. I would love to be in the position financially to by a recon box but at the moment I'm not able to.

Would it be worth while changing the Gearbox oil and while I'm at it the transfer box oil, i'm aware it wouldnt cure the issues with the box but would increase the life and improve use of the gearbox. I have only owned the Disco for a few days and it doesn't have any real history so am unsure when it was last changed etc etc.

What oil would you recommend for the gearbox and transfer box?

Roughly how much would i need of each?

Any little tips to aid it as i will be doing the work myself.

Oh and lastly anyone around the Herts / Essex border fancy giving me a hand, tea and bacon sandwiches will be provided :D

I've just replaced the oil in my TD5 gear box to try to fix a crunch when shifting 1st to 2nd when the engine is hot (oddly silky smooth when cold) got genunie Landrover mtf94 but alas it has made no difference- bracing myself for costly mechanical repairs now...

Synchromesh gone/going between 1st and 2nd. Change gear gently and it'll last pretty much forever as it is. I wouldn't bother changing it til it really is knackered.;)

there is a special all singing all dancing oil you can get that's meant to work wonders. I can't remember what it is but hopefully someone on here can enlighten you.

yup, having tried the Oil trick the synchro is the only suspect- I am getting it done as its the only family car and is otherwise an absolutely pristine face lift late Disco, planning on keeping it for at least 5 years, I've been quoted a figure that equals how much my mortgage has dropped with the interest rates so easy come is easy go for this month- even changing gear really gently gives a crunch 50% of the time so it might not have much time left, its quite good fun when one of us is driving challenging the other to pull off without a crunch- some junctions like up hill into a busy roundabout it can't be done, often it can be done with care and timing.

The the only oil said to have even more magic properties than Landrover mtf94 is Diff Lock's stuff- I'm rapidly becoming knowledgable thanks to places like this.

All that has been said so far seems good to me although I have no experience with the diff lock oil. FWIW my 93 200tdi has had a 'lazy synchro' on second since I have owned it (two & a half years). By taking my time with the shift from 1 to 2 I rarely if ever get a noise.

I have changed the oil and it made no difference whatsoever but it does not seem to be getting any worse despite some off roading competitions?

If money is an issue then just check the level and keep it right then see if you can make it last until finances are better by changing gear with a little sympathy.

When the day comes when it finaly gives up I was going to fit the later R380 gearbox which apparently fits with ease however it seems they are not without problems.

regards

Dave
