Just read an article in the Darlington and Stockton times condemning Fire Chiefs in North Yorkshire for replacing senior officer's Skoda Octavias with Range Rover Evoques.

NY F&R spokesman Peter Hudson said;

"As a means of improving the overall severe weather response capability, the standard light vehicle fleet of cars and vans is to be amalgamated with the Land Rover fleet and will move to a combined fleet of more suitably equipped vehicles providing a more flexible, practical and cost-effective approach."

Union reps have branded the decision to lease a fleet of "Luxury" 4x4 vehicles as "self indulgent".

If they want a 'severe weather' capable vehicle, I don't think a plush carpeted Evoque would have been my first choice..... let alone the cost of an Evoque against a Defender.... or any of the Asian models!

What's your thoughts??

One thing they are built here ! so not exporting jobs , the cost is sort of irrelevant as they will spend the budget anyway .

they should be spending as little as possible to get vehicles that meet the spec .... any money left over can be allocated to the frontline equipment budget. i presume disco or even freelander are cost effective alternatives.

I'd have thought Freelanders would have done the do, however, a lot of lease cost is depreciation, the evoque probably has very low depreciation as it is a new Land Rover :)

Look's as if one's arrived. I had a chat with the station officer, apparently LR's lease price came in just above a Fiesta. Due probably to low depreciation and subsequent resale value.

But the papers would never publish that... that would mean what they've done is potentially sensible and would not make a news story :rolleyes:
