Non-veg biodiesel

I'm convinced enough now to give it a go. I have an indicated half tank of DERV and its never had anything but in it. I reckon thers probably 30 L in it so should I jump straight in with another 30L or should I try it a bit less first?

No not for the first time as the veggie cleans the tank out of all the crap, best to put 9ltr (2gallon) through it first. if it starts to feel sluggish remove the sediment bowl and clean it out, disco's don't normally clog up the filter with having the sediment bowl at the back (only cleaned out mine once). I run mine on 25% mix all the time and from time to time I buy some bio diesel to obtain a reciept (in case of roadside stop)

Throw it in and enjoy .....

Half-in-half ..... I'm doing the same in the morning in my Disco TD5.

I'd personally just stick 10 liters in at the moment to make it a 33% mix, and see how you get on with it. Others may think different, like up to 50% in the winter, and 75% in the summer, if we EVER have one again.;)

Check your fuel filter regulary though, and be prepared to chenge it slightly more often.

On saying that, i did approx 3000 miles before i changed mine, and the old one was still pretty damned clean tbh.
You'll get a real buzz pouring it in. I did. :D
Yours is the same model spec and year as mine, so you really should be ok.

In a TD5?

You used it before? Running ok? I thought it was a bit dodgy on the newer engines, but am willing to be proven incorrect quite happily

Differing opinions ey?

I'm running on approx 2/3rds bio diesel from the garage pump that I'm so lucky to have so close to home @85p a liter (just gone up from 80p), and the other third with veggy oil.
Once I get a pump, i'll be using Costcos big drums of the stuff as it's much cheaper.
Tried it first, but ended up pouring most of it down the side of the car.

I must check out this sedement bowl you speak of. I wasn't aware of that...not being a mecahnic like.

Is it not legal to use veg oil then as opposed to bio diesel? I know about the 2500L rule. Just wondered why you need the receipts?

Think it's just to prove the point if you get pulled, and i suspect that is going to be be more commonplace the dearer this 'normal' stuff becomes.

I even considered 'red', but the penalties for getting caught are very severe apparently.

just being cautious with the receipts, red is a confiscation of vehicle along with kero.

I believe so.
We have a regular D.O.T. police, customs, and dhss spot check facility lay by and weigh bridge just up the road from me at Dunkirk at the end of the M56.

Regulary see cars and vans being low loaded away. :(

Well, I've gone and done it - 10L of veg oil from Netto. £6.80 for 10L instead of £10.50. There must be a catch?

68p a liter? No catch there i'd say. Not the cheapest, but a darn sight cheaper than £1.04-10 i'd say.;)
Just saved yourself abot 4 quid. Now go and buy yorself a box of cigars and bask in that knowledge.:D

Just been in tesco, cheapest is 67.5p/l in a 15l can. I've got about a dozen empties that won't fit in me little recycling box so think I'm gonna have to take up fly tipping:)

I always miss out when it comes to this kind of thing....I'm reading through this thread thinking, hmmmm interesting, might give this a go.
Then I read that it'll fcuk up a TD5.

So if rapeseed / sunflower oil is out of the question, can I run on biodiesel?

Someone let me know, I aint a happy teddy at the moment, nearly £100 to fill the beast.

TD5 runs OK on bio-d. However there is some suggestion that it may wreck the seals on the fuel pumps of common rail engines. The man at Pure Fuels reckoned not to exceed a 50% mixture. It also cleans out the gunge in yur tank and may block up yur filter. See Pure Fuels Ltd - London's Biodiesel Company

Cheers fer that, there's a couple of local places that do BioDiesel. I'll be paying them a visit then.
Do you reckon the suggested ratio might cause damage in the long term, or only if I use more than 50% Bio?

ah got as far as page 6 and gave up.. but ah think yer all missing something here.. why not find out where luigi in the chippy get his oil from, cos i'd be surprised if he bought it in 1ltr bottle. more like 5 gallon drums
