Hi, trying to read the codes of my mk1 freelander that has suddenly become a non-starter. When trying to read code I get no signal? Can’t hear the fuel pump any more.
Car cranks but won’t start, does show life with some easy start sprayed in.
Help!

Thanks all
Fuel pump was my first thought too so swapped out for a new one, but that made no difference.
Will certainly try resetting the fuel cut off, would that shut off the comms from the ecu? As mentioned, I can’t get any signal from the management system to read codes.

I wouldn't have thought so when i first had mine and i was having a few probs with it starting , i did pressed the fuel cut off switch (shouldn't have but i know) and i had no probs with the ecu

Hi, checked the fuel cut-off, no issues there.
Still no response when trying to read the codes, no signal.
Does this indicate a dead ECU?

Checked all fuses and relays, nothing wrong on that side which leads me to think it the ecu itself?

^^^ Yes, before condemning the ECU, check all the power and ground connections are there. Look up a wiring diagram for it - hopefully someone on here has one.

ECU faults are very rare so this is your last option after double checking everything else.
Can you now hear the fuel pump after replacing it?

Its not unknown for the OBD2 port to suffer from spreading terminals. This would cause no connection issues with the ECU. To check the ECU is booting up, you simply need to listen for the rear fuel pump. If the pump runs for about a minute after switching on the ignition, the ECU is working. The MIL lights will also come on then go off, or remain on if a fault is detected.

Hi, thanks all for yours posts here.
My first thought was the fuel pump as it was always very noticeable when I turned ignition on, then when this all happened it stopped. So I changed the pump but nothing!
The MIL lights that stay on are the orange downhill and the ETC. But the really odd part is the temp gauge goes straight to max and the red light on temp gauge comes on.

Engine check light comes on and stays on.
Radio (aftermarket fit), windows, indicators, etc work as expected.
Engine cranks well, but as mentioned the fuel pump isn’t working even after fitting new one.

If the engine check light comes on, this would indicate some function from the ECU. If it didn't come on, that would suggest a dead ECU. Also some accessories would pack up.
Have you tested the new pump on a 12v feed? It could be a dead replacement ( not uncommon)
The temp gauge could be a faulty temp sensor, but leave alone until this is sorted.
Does your OBD scanner work on another vehicle? Was it working on this car before all this kicked off?
