Have had a go at changing the timing belt and pulleys etc.
Turned the engine over by hand on the crank many times first to check for anything obvious.
Have put it all back together, bled all air from the fuel filter (it seams) and after 2hrs of attempted jump starts it won't frickin fire up!
Am getting diesel from all the injectors..

Any ideas anyone?
It was starting up fine before I removed rocker shaft to replace a snapped arm and did the belt.
Is it possible to get the timing wrong, thus making the engine unable to fire up? I did take care that engine was at tdc (from bell housing and arrow on crank sprocket) and bunged a pin through the injector pump..

Any advice appreciated :)

I believe you can fit the belt when it's supposedly 'set' at tdc but is actually 180 degrees out. I'd suggest resetting it with the pulley turned through one revolution.

Dont forget TDC occurs twice on every firing stroke, once on the compression, and once on the exhaust stroke. You need to set it up at the top of the compression stroke.

Thing is I tried to keep the crank sprocket as still as possible, am sure I didn't move it At any point more than a 1/4 turn whilst the belt was off. If it's 1 or 2 teeth out would there be any likelyhood of it not firing up?
Thanks

Yes that would stop it starting it could also cause valves to hit, but i think you already said you turned engine over by hand before attemting to start? are you getting any smoke from the exhaust when cranking engine over??

thanks, no smoke it's not firing at all.
Was wondering whether it's an issue with plugs but they are all in tight and wiring harness looks good

Even with glow plugs not working it would still smoke as it would try and burn fuel, mine starts first time without giving plugs time to heat up. You may have already answered these but have you got fuel at injectors crack off pipe crank engine should get a healthy squirt off fuel? have you rechecked timing cam and pump?

Yep!!
After reluctantly pulling it apart again it seems that the crank was half a tooth out, I ruddy hope this is the issue.. :)

shall make sure that I slacken off the fuel pump sprocket bolts and refit the belt starting at the crank next time

note that he leaves the cam sprocket loose and readjusts it after fixing the belt, to ensure its correct.

Just read through your post again you say you have changed one rocker due to it snapping did the cam belt snap? or was it very loose? (belt may have jumped) i think its very unusual for a rocker to snap unless the valve has hit a piston. Did everything time up correctly before you removed the belt? have you checked all the push rods? are any of them bent?
The fact you arnt getting any smoke from exhaust when trying to start the engine means your either not getting any fuel into cylinders or youve got no compresion (bent valves/pushrods.
I would aslo check the valve clearances.

Hi, the belt never snapped just changed it as am not sure when it was last done.
Push rods seem fine I'm guessing the rocker snapped as I buggered up setting the clearances.
A mate came over last night to advise, and apparently the crank being slightly out along with the injector pump (drill bit in hole was at an angle) could be enough to make the disco a non-starter.
Apparently there was some smoke coming out the back - was hard to originally tell on my own! - indicating unburnt fuel. Sorry for misinformation!

Once I manage to get the ruddy crank gear off shall have another go at fitting the belt, fingers crossed..

So, belt off and replaced crank gear whilst I was at it (once I managed to get the ruddy thing off!). Interestingly the new gear which came with tensioner pully without plastic 'sidewalls' is slightly different and doesn't have a timing notch!

I then put the belt on after ensuring that all the crank, cam and injector pullys (pin) all lined up. I also did it properly this time and slackened off the cam and injector sprocket bolts to allow thd belt to fit correctly.*

I then turned the engine over a few times on the crank, re-tensioned the belt and put it back together.

At which point I put a fookin hole in the rad!! Another load of money well spent, especially as this one was in good nick with all filaments in place :( :(

and then to top things of it still won't start!!!
A lot more smoke out the back now so am guessing the injector timing was out before today. One thing I did notice is that the bellhousing timing hole doesn't seem to line up with crank when at tdc, i.e I cant get a drill bit in the bellhousing timing hole when all arrows line up in the belt casing.
This doesn't seem right to me.

Plan of action tomorrow is to check there's power to the wiring harness and that heater plugs are working. Have hoiked out the battery to give it a good charge over night.

I'm running out of ideas and patience with this project now.
Any ideas on how to get this engine running much appreciated.

I'm off to look for a new rad.. *:( :(
