I have been playing with my D2 a lot just recently and need to post some threads. Replaced gearbox cooler pipes, airbags, power steering pipes and spliced in a new flexi to the Ace pipes from the pump. All working pretty good but the power steering seems a lot noisier. The pipes were Brit Part and are all in the original rubber mounts and not fouling anywhere. I had been mistakenly using ATF in the power steering for the last 6 years but re-filled with ACE fluid after the new pipes were put on. The noise was apparent straight away and seems at its worst on light turning at about 1700 revs. Full lock doesn't seem to make it worse and higher engine speeds seem to dim it. It would seem to emanate from the steering box and seems worse down the right hand side. I replaced the ACE fluid with ATF but the noise is still there. Done about a thousand miles since the replacement with no change
Any ideas and is there a product that reduces noise from steering boxes?

Have you tried bleeding the system? there is a bleed nipple on the steering box

Just an update. I have replaced the Steering fluid with ATF and it is no different. Bled the steering box. Checked the pipe routes and fixings and I can't find any reason for the increased noise since the pipe replacement. The pipes were Britpart and I know there is little respect on this site for them, but surely that couldn't be the reason. Once again, any ideas folks.

I've seen a LR bulletin about series 1 disco PS pipes vibrating/resonating and mine does it. Kind of whirring-farting noise as you turn the wheel.

Good luck - probably no help what os ever!

Thanks guys for replies.

I can't just imagine the box being faulty. The resonating pipes sounds realistic and if they are slightly thinner, thicker or whatever than proper Land Rover ones. I'll try to get it in the air this weekend and have a play.
Incidentally; bought a new rear doughnut and EGR blank kit, so, if the weather is not to wet, I'll be doing that too.

Richard.
