Hi Guys,

Apologies for yet another question, but my '95 300TDi has a noise (surprise surprise)

The steering wheel makes a moaning and groaning noise, when you are manoeuvring at slow speeds such as parking and a little bit when driving.

My fathers P38 does the same and I was wondering if anyone had a fix or any idea what was causing it.

Jason

My Td5 does this and i was told that the pipes are strapped/attached to the body work or chassie and has the fluid (under pressure) moves through the pipes it amplifies the noise, off putting but i live with it.

Mind you could be codswalup Ive been fed with.Just what i was told.

All of mine did/do it and it seems as they get older they groan.....never had low fluid being the cause with any of mine but always worth a check and the only way i got rid of it was to change the p/steering box.

Nick.

Air getting in your power steering system, causing it to groan. Usual place is along the pipes at the front. They rub against each other and chafe through - or the connection to the fuild bottle.

Usually, fluid loss is very slight - look for oily residue on the pipes where the fluid is leaking from. Probably won't be wet, just look blacker than the rest of the pipe!

All D1's and some D2's are prone to this. It is caused by an under-specified pas at time of design, which with wear and age becomes more pronounced.

It can be reduced or eliminated by any one of the following:

1. Top up pas fluid;

2. Completely change pas fluid;

3. Run front tyres at 32psi;

4. Renew serpentine belt;

5. Renew pas pump;

My wife's TDi had been moaning for a while so I first changed the pas fluid which improved things slightly, then replaced the pas pump and all moaning (even from the steering!!) stopped.

Under-specc'd and old, that's why they do it.
