The radiator fan on my 86 3.5 EFI is noisy as hell from cold and gets quieter once the engine has warmed up:confused: Is this normal??

Im sure it works fine when up to temp as i can hear it cutting in and getting a little noisier when the temp rises enough to engage the vicious part of the fan.

Its as if the vicious part is fully locked when cold and gradualy eases off until the temp is at normal running temp:confused:

Im driving down the road sounding like a bloody hovercraft for the first 5 mins or so in the mornings!!!!

Thanks,
Stu

You sure its for the first 5 mins and not more like 30 secs or something??

I assume the Classics use the same sort of viscous fan setup as the P38?? If they do then on the P38 when you first start in the mornings the fan will roar for the first few mins if left idling and for around 30 secs when first setting off. This is because the oil in that silver looking bit in the middle of the fan has all drained to the bottom. The fan sound decreases as the oil that has settled overnight then disperses back round the viscous coupling via centrifugal force.

If it really is sounding loud for the first 5 mins I would think you may need to replace the viscous coupling in the centre of the fan.

(...cue all the electric fan lovers to come along and tell you to rip that viscous controlled fan out... )
