Hi,

when my engine warms up there is a load clicking noise. Guessing its a lifter.

Can I just change lifters or should I do lifters and cam?

Can i get away with original rockers and pushrods?

it is only one thats noisy and just paranoid its doing damage.

Engine runs smooth and pulls strong just has an annoying tapping noise

Any advice would be appreciated

Sorry forgot to put engine etc in original post.

Its a 4.6 V8 in a 1996 P38 with 125,000 on the clock

I see Rimmer bros do a cam and lifter kit.

Is it any good?

Anybody used one?

I sincerely hope not, but it does sound like a liner if worse when warm. What leads you to a lifter problem?

What lead me to being a lifter is neighbour whose mechanic reckoned it was a lifter or valve. So I was hoping it was that.

If it's a liner could mean death of another p38.

If I keep driving and it's a liner what's could go wrong??

Mine was tapping when warm & i was hoping for a lifter issue. Kept driving mine for 5k but the noise just got too loud. The liner on mine made a nice ring in the cylinder head which meant new heads when i put a top hat block in.
I would have thought lifter issues would be worse from cold (before the oil pumps up). Hope i'm wrong though.

Ok.

When engine cold tapping is there.
When I gets warm still there just a bit louder.

When I Rev to over 1200 rpm it stops??

So, do you guys still think it could be a liner.

I had head almost on rocker cover listening for the noise. Got a slightly warm & a little bit singed ear now.

Thanks

Ok, well if it's tapping when cold then less likely to be a liner, although they do quieten down as revs rise (the liner becomes 'suspended' as the piston cycles increase - mine was quiet on the motorway) . I guess only way is to strip it down to the rockers, intake & valley gasket off.
