noisey timing ?

Disco 300tdi , today I had a loss of power at about 50 mph which some 3 miles later got better.I stopped the car and opened the bonnet and could hear quite loud tapping coming from where the timing gear is I think.

The problem has now gone away and I get intermittent tapping that goes away and there is no power loss.

Is this a prelude to an expensive job ? What precautions should I take ?

I have the same sound coming from my engine although it's the 4.0. Anyway I asked my mechanic about it and he said it's the timing chain getting loose and broken in. Once he said that I immediately asked if I was going to have to replace that because I know it's expensive, he said that it will last forever but you'll have to live with the clicking. That said I wouldn't worry too much about it.

A 300tdi does not have a timing chain - it's a belt and more prone to fail. I'd check! The belt might have shredded and the shreds tap against the casing. Check it immediately - otherwise it might get mighty expensive!

Alright I didn't know the TDIs were belt. Unfortunately we don't get those in the states
