Howdy all. I’ve had a noisey engine for a few months now and for the life of me I can’t seem to diagnose her. At idle she’s not bad, a bit thumpy and shaky in the cabin but not too bad. However the noise gets a lot louder when under acceleration from setting off from lights to nailing it up a hill. Although when she’s over running she’s a lot quieter not thumping at all so I suspect injectors but I’m no expert???.
I’ve already done the usual.
Fuel filter new
Air filter new
Valve adjustment
Engine oil new
Cleaned lift pump filter
Vacuum pump new
Checked injection pump timing

Any ideas from the gurus will be awesome!!

TIA

I had a sort of tappity rattle under the same conditions as you but 200tdi, turned out to be injector seat washer(s).
Also blowing exhaust manifold gaskets make a similar noise and blowing head gaskets make a weird noise too but they usually get worse fairly quickly.

Thanks for the reply, was your noise under load and then went away on the overrun?

How did you check your timing? When was the timing belt last changed?
Checked it with the flywheel locking pin and timing pin. The pin was a tight fit but went in. Can the timing still be out? I’m more of a hands on guy I don’t know all the lingo.

Cheers

No bother with the lingo, I'll not use any. Did you change the belt?

no only the the small cover held in by three bolts? Is there anyway I could loosen injectors whilst it’s running to see if one is faulty??
Do you know when the belt was changed and by whom?
I'm probably telling me auld granny how to suck egg, but the pin in the flywheel locks the crank in position, the pin through the hole in the timing case holds the fuel injection pump pulley in position, but you can't see if your cam pulley is a tooth out.

Haha I’m not that bad I was obviously very naive to think that the timing pin would be a definite to see if the timing is out my bad as for when it was done I don’t know and by who I don’t know either, the last owner was a bit of a bul****er.

If both pins fit even if a little tight, the inj pump timing is near enough, but you cant verify the camshaft timing with cover fitted.

You can crack the injectors one at a time whilst its running to see what if any difference each injector makes, only needs a half turn and it will be leaking, all normal safety rules apply! the one that makes the least difference is the weakest cylinder, but it might not be an engine fault, it could also be an injection pump issue.

Quick check for inj pump failure is swarf stuck to the plunger on the stop soleniod.

No, I think you have done well to check with those two pins. You're obviously not a novice. How many miles does it have on the clock? If I didnt know the history of a 300Tdi Landy, one of the first things I would do is replace the timing belt.

My post just now I wrote last night, but fell asleep just as I was about to press the reply button. In my defense I'd drank a few bottles of Leffe and a bottle of Merlot

Haha at least someone had a good night . Thanks all for the replies guys I will definitely replace the timing belt asap!!!

As everyone else has said above - timing first... and change the belt

I'd also point out that the injectors are a service item, and they should be changed or refurbed every 100K, according to LR and Bosch....

IME, they will last a lot longer than this, but for the £150 cost of refurbed ones - it ain't worth it. OMO. YMMV. :)

Quit it with the lingo she’s just coming up to 99k miles now so maybe injectors but I’ll get the belt done this week. Does anyone recommend a timing belt kit? 1996 300tdi N757LAM
