Freelander 2 (LR2) noise under bonnet

Evening all. My FL2 started making a noise in the summer but only when cold. The air con seemed to be the culprit so I stopped using it. But then the noise started again so I ruled it out. Typically the day I took it to the garage it stopped making the noise. It was much cooler by then. Today, maybe 6 weeks later, I get the noise again. It is cooler still and damp. AC on or off it still makes the noise. More like ticking now than the clunky noise I had in the summer. A friend (also with a FL2) thinks the idler pulley arm might be sticking. I reckon the belt has had it.
Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated

C’mon, give us a bit more info. How many miles has it done? Has the belt ever been replaced? Does it look cracked or ragged? If the belt is truly suspect, change it or save up for a new engine.
Anything trapped in the fans (birds, cats, leaves, plastic)?
Anything loose that shouldn’t be?

Noise can be a multitude of things, especially with the complex 2.2 diesel engine.

If yer rev the engine while in neutral when stationary, does the noise change? In the noise proportional to the engine revs?

It was a couple of weeks back when the nose first started. Got very screechy but stopped when air con was turned off.

So I now have a shiny new aircon compressor. This was identified by the garage as the culprit having left it with them for a cold start. Having driven 10 miles to the garage the other day it had gone quiet!!
Thanks all for your responses. Despite my vagueness, I hope this thread helps someone else another day.

Cam belt done last year. Nothing in fans. No idea what I should be looking at or checking, which is why I reached out on here! All sorted now tho
