Hi I have a Freelander 1 with diesel engine that is giving me some problems when reversing. When driving forward all seems fine but when I select reverse and move onto either lock I get a horrible juddering as though the handbrake is sticking on. Could this be a problem with the IRD even though everything is fine when reversing in a straight line or alternatively the VCU?

I have looked at various online sites and the workshop manual but cannot see the best way to proceed forward to identify the problem. Any assistance will be greatfully accepted.

Welcome

The juddering could be the bearings either side of the vcu. The reverse problem when turning could be down to the vcu over working due to it starting to seize and fail. This is due to the ratio of front to rear wheel turning being greater than if it was in a straight line. Do the one wheel up test below to test it.
