Just had another look at the readings now the car has cooled down a bit.

EDC is showing coolant temp as 12.10 degrees :clap2:
BECM is showing c/temp as 255 ???
Air temp is reporting a temp of -38.88.
Now i know its cold but FFS. :D:D

If your car has an EGR and MAF, the temperature reading means nothing as the sensor is not fitted, the air temperature is obtained from the MAF.
BECM temperature is nonsensical, I'll report it to BBS. Engine temp for the EDC and the gauge use different sensors.:)

Think tomorrow i will diss battery again and check clean and refit all relevant earths incl BECM.

Very strange how the temp gauge registers normally when in BECM diagnostic mode, and every other dash instrument is off
Cheers for your input so far Keith.
:)

The gauge not working was I believe the sensor. The BECM temperature reading is an unconverted reading from the sensor and ranges from 255 at or below freezing to zero at about 120C.

Holy Dead Thread Resurrection Batman!!!!

You are right Keith it turned out to be the wrong sensor in the car ,and again thanks for all your help.

It was an engine change. Possibly from an Omega, the Vauxhall temp sensor fitted was not talking to the Range rover BECM.
