Hi Land Rover Enthusiasts! I need some help with my car. ('99 1.8i) Cranks but no start. The gas pump does not make any kind of sound though it should. Power is supplied to the connector on the gas pump (12v to purple/white and 5v to green). The pump has been replaced but there is still no sound. I already ordered a new relay, but I don't know if that will help as the power comes to the pump. Where does the pump ground wire go and does the relay control earth too? I think the inertia switch is working properly. Button pressed down, wires disconnected, wires connected, no different except door locks open when wires connected. The gas pump fuse is ok and it has 12v when key is on 2nd position.

What i should do next?

Edit: Starter motor is also replaced not long ago because of faulty solenoid.

If the door looks are opening, then that could point to the red button impact sensor.

However power to the pump would suggest that the pump relay is being energised.

Have you used a car headlamp bulb on the pump feed wire, to check it is supplying sufficient current to run the pump?

The pump is grounded by the ground (black IIRC) wire, so you need to check that the ground is also secure. Again test with a car headlamp bulb across the pump live and ground wires. The other wire is for the gauge, which I think is grounded via a resistor in the pump assembly.

So no chance fuel pump relay controls pump via ground wires instead of 12v? I will try to find bulb somewhere and test. There is 2 ground wires and both of those join the main harness and then disappears to somewhere. Not exactly sure which one is the right ground for pumps main power.

No. The pump is live switched.

They'll go back to the ground point behind a trim panel somewhere (probably rear right).

Ground is ground, so providing they are both black, they should both go to ground anyway.

Spark plugs are dry so no fuel coming through. I also tested the old fuel pump with battery and it works. Can you tell me where is the fuel filter located in this car? Under the hood maybe?

on the 1800cc the fuel pump is in the tank I believe it is a screw on type you have to take the whole thing out of the tank and you will see the metal canister.

I did replace the whole sender unit so there is new filter allready. I thought there would be another somewhere. I guess pressure regulator is in sender unit too so no need to check that either. Dammit, what next? It has been very cold for few days so there might be ice somewhere in fuel system but i cant figure out where. I havent checked for fuel pressure because i dont have tools for that.

And thank you guys for giving me all the info so far.
I appreciate this.

I used my multimeter to beep this ground point with fuel pump connectors and there is contact.
So you have ground to the pump, but have you checked the current capacity of the live feed? IIRC it's a resistance wire, which can go open circuit under current.
Fuel filter still not found.
The filter is built into the pump/sender assembly, along with the pressure regulator.

Have you tried to run the pump with 12 volts straight to the connector?

Still trying to look for a nice way to test current and give 12v straight from battery without taking pump out of the tank. I did not find enough wire to do testing but tomorrow i can buy more. I think i will borrow battery from my summer car but i have to continue tomorrow because its getting dark and cold. Car is sitting outside covered in snow and im getting tired with it. :D

I removed the fuel line and there was no pressure. The pump remains quiet. I fed the pump directly from the battery and it started working. Then switch back to the car's own plug and engine runs normally. I don't know what was wrong, but now everything is fine. I'm monitoring the situation and replacing a new relay when it arrives. Thank you for your help and lets hope our land rovers stay running. :)

And somehow i feel that this battle is not over yet. Car still runs like it should but for sure there is something wrong with relay or wiring. All i did was i replaced fuel pump to notice that the old pump works just as good as the new one. Theres got to be more to come and every time i drive i think that this car will fail me again soon. Lets hope that this doesnt happen when im next to big ass truck 100kmh in my speedo. :D

And sorry for bad english and typos. Im from Finland, and i try my best.

The car worked for one day. I did a bulb test and the result was that the 21w bulb did not light. I added 2 extra ground wires and still the bulb didn't light up. Today I get a new relay and hopefully it will fix the problem. If not, then I replace the entire wire for the fuel pump.

If a car headlamp bulb doesn't light, then there's an issue, as the pump will use a similar current to the headlamp bulb. So it's going to be the relay contacts aren't make firm contact, or the feed wire has gone high resistance.

It was hard to get the right relay but it finally arrived. First came the wrong part and covid19 slows down shipments. Unfortunately, the new relay didn't help. I'm going to pull a whole new power cord to the pump that bypasses everything except the ignition switch. At least this will ensure the car is working and this scenario will finally be over. However, all tips are still welcome before I disassemble the car for pulling the cable.

Edit: Can crankshaft position sensor be faulty? When i try to start, needle in rpm gauge is dead. Rpm gauge worked fine when i got this car running tho...
