no sport/manual light or low range

hi all picked up a 4.6 p38 yesterday but has no low range and the sport button does not work have tried putting in low range but there is nothing no lights noise nothing no msg displayed would a faulty ecu cause all the above faults have read about this on here and seems to be common problem but not found a thread with all my symptoms thanks in advance its a 1996 4.6 hse by the way
 
Check the wiring from the selector. There should e a "Clunk" when shifting from high to low plus the letter "L" will be displayed on the dash, as should the letter "S" when sport mode is selected.
 
yeah there is no s or l when you say check the wiring do you mean just remove the trim from around the gear stick and see if its intact/connected as such there are no lights either when i shift to low. high range side just stay lit and lights move with gear stick as if not even been moved to low if this helps thanks
 
You should also get some beeps while it's changing from high to low.

Sounds like something pretty fundamental (but probably simple) is wrong.

I've got a problem where I can't select 1st in low range (ok in high). Probably not related though.

will have a look at it tomoz and see if i can see anything obvious and go from there i will let you all no tomoz how i get on and if any other ideas befor tomoz pls let me know thanks

Just how many Rangies have you got Fella ??? ... We cured a fault with (was it yer Mums??) Then we.ve gone on to fix Earthin faults on another one

And now you've come up with "I got this real Cheap" HSE thing....

I make that 3 AT LEAST!!! .... Bugger me you must have a huge garage to keep em all in !!!

If yer "Fixin em for customers" You'll be receivin a HUGE amount of Invoices from us on here .... I charge £25/Hour Wammers is at £40 & IrishRovers charges are well into TRIPLE FIGURES!!!

So Far I make it as follows

Feb............. you had a 4.0 "County"

March .........You had a 2.5 DSE

April ...........You had a 4.6 HSE

i have a p38 4.6 which is my own which had the elctrical problem today and the p38 diesel is my mums as stated think she has now joined herself on here now though and yes the one with the low range fault is one i brought to sell on as got it fairly cheap and would like to learn more about them but only 1 car is mine sadly

the 4.0 county was mine sold that as it had spring conversion which i was not keen on so it went and i replaced it with the same 4.6 that i still have now and your help is much appriciated people if anyone need any advice on fitting kitchens /bedrooms bathrooms etc will be happy to help

Sorry I should Clarify that .. I charge £25/hour for "NET" service actually "On the job" its £300/hour (with a minimum call out of 3 Hours!!!!!) + pertol + expenses + £10 fer pictures (£20 if my hands are dirty in the Pic!!)

You may forgive me for thinking it is not as hilarious as all that. The thought of some gayboy near my rear end does not fill me with thoughs of laughter.
